Ordinarily, you should be allowed to take a shower within 24 hours after the surgery. However, you should still stay away from still water for about 2 weeks after the operation. This means you cannot go to the swimming pool or use your Jacuzzi. You will also have to stay away from whirlpools, oceans, and lakes.
Also, you may not be able to use your underwire bra while you are still recovering. If you do, the wire can displace the breast implant in the wrong position. Your attending surgeon would most likely give you an elastic bandage to wear around your breasts. This is good for supporting the position of the implants during your recovery.
The Milestones of Breast Augmentation Recovery
The following are the different stages that mark the basic milestones of your recovery process after breast augmentation. Before we outline these milestones, you should understand that there may be slight variations in your own recovery process because each individual has a unique body
2-3 days after the operation
You may experience mild to moderate pain. However, this can easily be managed by taking pain medication. It is also normal to notice some sort of swelling and bruising of your breasts. These are all normal.
During this stage of your recovery, you should use a surgical bra as well as compression bandages in order to reduce the level of discomfort and also to protect the surgical wounds.
You may also feel nausea. This is nothing serious. It is just an after-effect of the anesthesia that was used in the procedure.
By the second day, it would be fine for you to shower. However, remember to avoid still waters.
1 week after the operation
1 week after your operation, you should be able to return to work if your work does not require heavy physical activities. At this stage, you should perform only light activities. Stay away from all kinds of strenuous movements, including activities like lifting and bending.
You should return to your doctor for a post-operative checkup a week after your operation. He will inspect your incisions and your breasts just to be sure that your recovery is going on well without complications.
2 weeks after the operation
By this time, you should be feeling more or less normal. You should be able to carry out a lot of normal day to day activities without any form of pain. However, you should avoid all forms of vigorous exercise. By the end of two weeks, you should be able to take your bath without any risk of complications.
4 weeks after the operation
At this stage of recovery, you should have recovered enough to be able to do normal exercises, except those that are specifically targeted at the chest.
6 weeks after the operation
By 6 weeks, you should have fully recovered. When your recovery is complete, you can do any exercise you want without restraint. You should also be able to sleep lying face down or on your sides. You should also be able to put on your push-up or underwire bras.
More so, your breast implants would have fully settled and are not at risk of being displaced. By six weeks, you should have gotten your desired result and fully recovered from the surgery.
Tips to Help You Recover Faster
One of the major things that can speed up your recovery process is to make sure that you follow all the instructions that your doctor gives you. Usually, after the surgery, your attending surgeon will give you some instructions. These instructions are very critical so make sure you follow them to the letter.
Also, make sure you don’t miss any of your follow-up appointments after the surgery. This will allow your doctor to closely monitor and track the progress of your recovery.
Meanwhile, make sure you take out enough time to rest. In fact, you should not return to work until after a full week. Also, while sleeping, don’t lie face down.
Eat only light meals, and drink plenty of water. Furthermore, avoid tight fitted clothing and avoid any form of physical movements that can make your breasts to bounce. For instance, don’t run or jump until you have fully recovered.
